Painting and Drawing
Painter and lecturer, born in Watford, Hertfordshire, who graduated and obtained his postgraduate diploma from the Royal Academy Schools, 1978-84, teachers including Peter Greenham, Leonard McComb and Arnold Van Praag. He lectured in contextual studies at Hertford Regional College and on the three dimensional higher education course at Middlesex University from 1998. Warren was made a Fellow of Digswell Arts Trust, 1977. Neo-Aestheticism and “found” paintings were influences on Warren’s work, in which he sought to “work towards an abstract beauty through paint and the image”. The late paintings of Turner and those of Whistler, Kandinsky and Mondrian were important. Group shows included the National Portrait Gallery; Royal Festival Hall; Royal Over-Seas league; Plumbline Gallery, St. Ives; and Court Gallery, Nether Stowey. In 2001 warren shared an exhibition, The Figurative Tradition, with Henry Israel at Indian King Arts Centre, Camelford. Warren lived in Padstow, Cornwall, then in 2002 moved to Newlyn, “enabling me to get closer to the influences of both the Newlyn and St. Ives Schools, which have such a tremendous influence upon my work, (Julius) Olsson in particular”. Shows at Contour Contemporary; Lander Gallery, Truro; and Padstow Contemporary Art Gallery. In 2004, he created the new Penzance Art Gallery (PZAG).
