Painting a pivotal moment in History ...
Two Paintings – The ‘Dance’ of 2021
What started out as a ‘Dance’ of the brush depicting movement, people, and colour, has become the first two paintings based upon The Capitol Riots of 2021 – PAT-RIOT I and II.
A ‘Patriot’ is a person who loves their country and is willing to defend it. In this case they defend the Democratic Freedom of The United States of America; yet with hindsight and a change of ruling party these people are seen as terrorists by Joe Biden (Democrats) whilst under Donald Trump (Republican) they are viewed as patriotic revolutionaries.
The irony as I see it is clear – here was a group of the Proletariat exercising their ‘freedom’ under the auspices of democracy; in a room full of paintings portraying the victories of George Washington over the ruling British – a revolutionary or a terrorist, who by crossing the Delaware changed the Fate and perception of a country.
The words of one protester struck me – “How do you think the United States was formed? – by Revolution”.
Terrorism or Revolution? To consciously set out to paint either as a subject would be facile – to discover a ‘Truth’ through the act of painting is to reveal the true fragmentation of the USA and is sincere. Note The Stars and Stripes – torn and shredded – in tatters, waved in defiance of being ‘Othered’ – A ‘dance of the Brush’ indeed.
Yet look closer at the bottom R/H of PAT-RIOT I – what do we see or imagine we see? A manifestation of paint – The ‘Mickey Mouse’ ears of a Trump/Putin creature as a Lord of Misrule orchestrating their works – or look again and the image dissolves into brushstrokes. Other ‘dances’ reveal a ‘Western’ character standing witness in the background to History. What do you see?
There is a third painting in this series – an empty Capitol Building with a painterly depiction of ‘The Spirit of The Buffalo’ – the true victim of the creation of a ‘Democratic’ America – a ‘Revelation’ of Paint in The Grand Manner!
