VAUGHAN WARREN (RAS) new exhibition@ CIRCLE CONTEMPORARY March-May 2015
'Boundless - Landscapes from the Edge'
My series of ‘new work’ being shown for the first time, exclusively, at Circle Contemporary Gallery, Hawksfield, explores an ongoing obsession between the visual similarity of the huge Atlantic clouds that float over Cornwall’s North Coast and with the landscape itself, simultaneously resembling the very granite boulders and blocks themselves in landscapes from the edge.
I have united this similarity in my mind through compositions and forms utilising sustainable and recycled materials such as household paint and torn cardboard to create ‘the extraordinary out of the ordinary to build up paint on a surface in a light bas-relief, capturing the light and colour, transcending base materials into alchemical equivalents, depicting the rugged stones which builds my cottage and other structures whilst unlocking the subconscious landscape images and designs of the out of work Cornish Miners that built them.
My works are continuing strands and themes in series that leads to paintings exploring the presence of landscape and the figure; the relationship between the environment and the human condition. Realisations through the actions of physics and chemistry of nature; fractured light; Climate Change; ‘schism’; works dwelling upon the chemical interactivity of paint itself at the atomic level.

With an energising and easily accessible position on the Atlantic Highway (A39) in Mid-North Cornwall, near Padstow and Wadebridge, ‘Circle Contemporary’ is establishing a visionary new art gallery to bring high quality work from national and international artists to this wild and beautiful part of the county.
Set within the context of the culturally dynamic Hawksfield Site, ‘Circle Contemporary’ will showcase paintings, sculpture, film, sound and performance that reflect the creative focus of the Hawksfield ethos, to create ‘the extraordinary out of the ordinary.’
Drawing on the long artistic tradition of the UK’s South West, ‘Circle Contemporary’ aims to encompass the vision of this great legacy through exploration of the relationship between the environment and the human condition.
‘Circle Contemporary’ will focus on artists whose work reflects upon and is rooted in, the environment; expressing through their work a contemporary visual language of form, light and sound by drawing upon natural materials combined with traditional and modern methods of application.
The ‘Circle Contemporary’ team, led by resident artist John O’Carroll whose open studio is located above the gallery and director Richard Eldridge, will curate a lively and vibrant quarterly exhibition programme , with exciting six weekly interventions by new artists.
The ‘John O’Carroll Studio ‘ will be hosting a series of artists workshops throughout the year, focusing on traditional methods of painting with a contemporary angle to complement this exhibition.
